Alchemist Scrap
Store |
![]() |
Among the country's regional scrap stores, the Alchemist is one of the newer projects. We were originally founded in 1990 by a charitably-minded local businessman, and were funded, to start with, by Seeboard (now Seeboard Energy), who seconded their own staff to oversee the project. In 1996, the Alchemist parted amicably from Seeboard, and a new manager, Paul Elleston, was appointed in a voluntary capacity. The following year, Paul was given part-time paid employment, which eventually became full-time. Paul continues to manage the day-to-day running of the Alchemist, and is supported by a part-time driver, as well as a small hardcore of unpaid volunteers from the local community. Overseeing the whole project is a board of voluntary directors, composed of representatives from member groups and a member of the voluntary staff. The directors convene regularly throughout the year to discuss and implement long-term policy decisions.
